The Central Energy Fund (CEF) has published its latest fuel price data ahead of the April 2025 adjustment announcement. The official new prices will be confirmed by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources in the final days of March and will take effect from 2 April 2025.

Current Petrol Prices

As of March 2025, the pump price for 95 Unleaded petrol in Gauteng is R22.37 per litre, while 93 Unleaded stands at R21.93 per litre. Diesel (0.05% sulphur) is priced at R21.19 per litre. These prices vary slightly between coastal and inland provinces due to the Basic Fuel Price differential.

Factors Affecting the April Adjustment

The rand/dollar exchange rate and the international crude oil price are the primary factors determining monthly fuel price adjustments in South Africa. A stronger rand or lower Brent crude price generally leads to a fuel price decrease, while a weaker rand or higher oil price pushes prices up. The CEF publishes daily snapshots of these indicators on its website.

Where to Find the Cheapest Fuel

While pump prices are regulated and uniform within each province, some petrol stations offer loyalty points, cashback rewards, or discounts on car washes and convenience store purchases. The AA of South Africa recommends comparing fuel station loyalty programmes if you are a frequent driver to maximise value.

Tips for Reducing Fuel Costs

Regular vehicle servicing, maintaining correct tyre pressure, avoiding roof racks when not in use, and reducing air conditioning usage at lower speeds can all contribute to better fuel efficiency. The AA estimates that these habits can reduce fuel consumption by between 10% and 20% for the average motorist.
